Dissecting a Black Hole
Toby Ord
Black holes are usually represented as solid black balls, the size of the event horizon. But I believe this leads to an impoverished (and sometimes incorrect) understanding of what they are and how they work. For example, it leads people (lay and expert) to confuse their various spherical shells such as the event horizon, the photon sphere, and the shadow. So this is my response — an attempt to reorganise and distill the existing knowledge to help us better visualise and understand the nature of a black hole.
